Investment in Art is gaining traction among national and international investors. In this Masterclass, art advisor Varvara Roza discusses some key trends in art investment from her perspective as a gallery owner and artist representative in London.

Trends in Investing in Greek Art

Investing in Greek and Cypriot art has seen significant growth in recent years, as collectors and investors worldwide recognize the cultural richness and artistic depth of the region. Greek modern art, particularly works from the 20th century, has gained international attention due to its unique fusion of traditional themes and modernist aesthetics. This burgeoning interest has extended to contemporary Greek and Cypriot artists whose works explore identity, mythology, and contemporary socio-political themes, making them increasingly appealing in the global art market.

Among the modern Greek artists who have gained international acclaim is Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, known for his contributions to modernism and his distinctive blend of Cubism with Greek motifs. Ghikas’s works, inspired by the landscapes and light of Greece, have seen rising auction values and are highly sought after by collectors. Similarly, the late Alekos Fassianos is celebrated for his vibrant, figurative art that evokes themes of Greek life, mythology, and nostalgia. His signature style and bold use of color have solidified his position as one of the most recognizable names in contemporary Greek art.

In the contemporary sphere, artists such as Jannis Kounellis, a pioneer of Arte Povera, and Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali, known for her neon sculptures, have drawn international acclaim. Younger generations of artists, including Giorgos Rorris and Pavlos, continue to innovate and command attention in the global market. These artists frequently explore themes rooted in Greek heritage while addressing universal issues, such as migration and identity, broadening their appeal to collectors worldwide.

Major investors in Greek modern art include prominent private collectors, galleries, and museums, both within Greece and internationally. The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation, for instance, has played a significant role in promoting Greek modern art through exhibitions and acquisitions. Additionally, high-profile collectors like Dimitris Daskalopoulos and Dakis Joannou have made significant investments in Greek and Cypriot art, further elevating its prestige. International institutions have also begun acquiring works by Greek artists, signaling broader interest and confidence in the market.

The growing popularity of Greek and Cypriot art has led to increased auction activity, with works by Greek artists fetching higher prices on the global stage. This trend reflects a broader appreciation for the region’s artistic contributions and the increasing recognition of its cultural significance. For investors, Greek and Cypriot art offers not only financial opportunities but also a connection to a rich artistic heritage, making it a compelling choice in the global art investment landscape.
